What Is Developmental Delay?

Studies indicate that monitoring the initial years in a child’s life are indicative not just of their growth but also their development. Monitoring is a process which begins right from conception and once a child is born it would involve observing how the child grows, plays, learns, speaks, acts and moves. Most of these skills are achieved by a certain age and these functional/age specific skills are referred to as developmental milestones. These milestones are skills that most children attain in their physical, emotional, behavioural and intellectual development, and are largely divided into different categories like:

  • Motor skills (Gross and Fine)
  • Language and Speech
  • Cognition
  • Social interaction
  • Adaptive/Daily living

Developmental delay

Developmental milestones are indicators of a child’s development and growth. Most children develop such skills at different rates, achieving these milestones at their own pace. A developmental delay means the child is continually falling behind in achieving these milestones expected by a certain age. A delay may be in one area or in multiple areas (global developmental delay). Cerebral Palsy, Down’s Syndrome, Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Dyslexia (Learning disabilities) etc. are some of the delay/disabilities in this category.

Not meeting these developmental milestones may not always be a reason to worry or panic but where a child is unable to naturally meet these milestones, he/she may require an early intervention assessment to understand the reason for such delay.

Areas of developmental delay

Motor skills (Gross and Fine)

Rolling over, sitting without support, standing, walking, holding, grasping, throwing etc.

Language and speech:

Using words, sounds, gestures and sentence formation etc.

Cognition:

Social interaction:

Group interaction and communication, play activities etc.

Adaptive/Daily living:

Eating, dressing, personal hygiene etc.
